There are some roads to fame that are pretty well traveled, and some that are engagingly bizarre. To become a celebrity, do something first, best, worst, or most outrageously. It is easy to see why an Olympic multiple medal winner is celebrated, but in other cases it is hard to understand. Why would someone even want to roll up the biggest ball of string in the world? Or eat the most live goldfish? It must mean something that so many of our celebrities are actually more or less odd. This should be a comfort to the rest of us non-celebrities. 'Most Outrageous' can happen in show biz, politics, the business world, or in just everyday life. Liz Taylor's many marriages, Peewee Herman's sense of humor, President Johnson picking his dog up by the ears, the woman who had so many kids she put one in the trunk of her car and let her out at rest stops. The old lady looking for the beef, Twiggy taking the skinny model look to fashionable extremes, the gecko who sells car insurance - who could have predicted what would catch the public's eye and ear? Other times, the talent is so great that it can't be derailed, and you get to listen to Elvis from the 1950s to forever. Marilyn Monroe had what it took and we still know it when we watch TCM in the new millennium. Anyone who sings like Barbara Streisand deserves to be famous. Creations like Miss Piggy and the cat in the hat are too good to be ignored. Of course, the worst of the worst will be remembered, too. Custer's last stand was a dismal failure, but no one remembers the names of the winners. Charles Manson is still famous after decades in prison. The mighty Casey is immortalized in poetry for striking out. Benedict Arnold is remembered by history students who forget many better men. Some become celebrities because it is all staged. Katie marrying Tom springs to mind. But sometimes it is an irresistible force that propels a person to the top. Michael J. Fox was just one of the kids on Family Ties - until the first episode.
